He is the owner and manager of Ikeda Brothers which grows, packages and ships a variety of produce across the country, specializing in Asian vegetables. In the early 1900s, Tom’s grandfather immigrated from Japan to harvest sugar cane in Hawaii. When that contract ended, he came to California to harvest sugar beets as a migrant farm worker moving up and down the state as crops matured. He went to school at Cal Berkeley to become a civil engineer, but eventually chose to return to the farm. It was six in the morning, the sun was coming up and while looking over a green leaf lettuce field, he thought, “Gosh, I planted that. Her grandfather had a dairy farm where she loved spending time in nature with animals as a kid. While she loved the farm, eventually she knew it was time to leave her small town. She moved to the Bay Area and attended college at Sonoma State University where she earned a Bachelors of Arts in Social Work with an emphasis in Clinical Health. She had always been interested in mental health and human biological, psychological, and social connections and how they connected with nature. As the daughter of a farmer and granddaughter of dairy farmers, agriculture was all she ever really knew. She knew that at some point, her life would become farming, too. In 1997, Kristi’s father Gary started his own pistachio farm from scratch. Pistachios were first brought to California in the 1960s from Iran. Commercial production didn’t start until the 1970s and has since grown to 400,000 acres statewide. In 2022, 1.1 billion pounds of pistachios were harvested in California. With control of most of the water, the family was able to buy a homestead or two every year for a hundred years, growing the ranch to what it is today. In order to afford to purchase land from homesteaders, Darrell said his relatives had to work off the ranch in order to make enough money. The cattle they raised only made enough for them to pay the taxes on their existing property. After the Homestead Act was enacted during the Civil War in the late 1800s, citizens could claim 160 acres of government land if they were to improve their plot by cultivating the land. Growing up their family did all things ranching together, but he never personally got into the horses as much as his siblings did. In high school, he decided he wanted to go into ag mechanics instead and went on to junior college to learn ag engineering. He wanted to be a metal fabricator more than anything, but necessity on the ranch made him learn a lot more than that. From electrical to plumbing to automotive repair, he learned to do it all. While he went to school for ag mechanics, Joel said most of what he learned was working alongside his father’s mechanic and other people that he apprenticed under at the ranch. The family would all agree that without Joel on the ranch, nothing else would work. Episode 12: Ryan Ranch - Nancy & Noel Ryan were married in 1974 and the fourth generation to live on their family ranch in Creston, California. While Noel worked off the ranch, Nancy was able to stay home with the kids which she describes as the best thing in the world. When they were scraping by, she would sew Noel his shirts for work. No matter what they faced, they got through it together. Nancy says that while it’s important that “town people” have read stories about people living on a ranch, people like her family are still living it. They still grow their own garden, can vegetables, and butcher animals as a part of their everyday life. The kids grow up knowing about the land and natural life cycles, understanding the ranching world by living it without having to be taught. Their oldest daughter Megan went to school to become an animal nutritionist with the plans to one day come back and make a living on the ranch. Her dad and uncle partnered on the ranch which eventually split and Megan witnessed the struggle of what it took to hold onto the land for the next generation. She started her career working at Farm Supply Company, the local farmer-owned co-op, when she was 15 years old where she developed a love of the western industry and lifestyle in addition to the agriculture side of things. Megan says it’s hard to make a living on the ranch in the traditional sense with cattle, grain, and hay. Alongside her parents, her siblings and her have talked about how they could sustain it for the next generation to come. They grew up in a very conservative, Republican, and Catholic area. He loved the way he grew up in youth agriculture organizations like 4-H and FFA and serving in various leadership roles. His love for agriculture was so deeply rooted that he went on to earn his degree in Viticulture and Enology at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo to pursue a career in the wine industry.
